This July marks 16 years since the Urumchi Massacre—a day when thousands of Uyghurs took to the streets to protest injustice, only to be met with brutal violence. On July 5, 2009, in the city of Urumchi (the capital of East Turkistan) , a peaceful protest turned into a tragedy. Hundreds were killed, thousands arrested, and many more disappeared. To this day, the truth remains buried under censorship and fear.
But we remember. And we speak out.
